Apple Certified System Administrator (ACSA) was an Apple Inc. designed certification program to verify an in-depth knowledge of Apple technical architecture. The last ACSA certification was offered for Mac OS X v10.6 and will not be available for Mac OS X v10.7 and later.

An ACSA will have demonstrated the ability to install and configure Mac OS X systems, as well as the ability to design and configure networks; enable, customize, tune, and troubleshoot a wide range of services; and integrate Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, and other Apple technologies within a multi-platform networked environment.

An ACSA will have demonstrated the ability to install and configure Mac OS X systems, as well as the ability to design. The macOS Support Essentials exam is delivered through OnVue —a live, online proctoring solution. You’ll schedule your exam session in advance, and you should plan to complete the exam in one sitting in a private space. You’ll need a current, government-issued ID to check in with the proctor and begin the exam.

No fancy software is required to stress test your Mac. You’ll only be using two applications that come with your Mac out of the box – Activity Monitor and Terminal. You’ll be using Terminal to perform the commands for the stress test, and you’ll be using Activity Monitor so you can monitor your CPU usage throughout it all. If the Mac still has a disc drive and is still running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) or below, insert the OS installation disc into your computer to ensure Apple Hardware Test can boot. If you have a Mac without a CD drive, like a MacBook Air, insert the Software Reinstall USB drive into one of the computer's USB ports.

The ACSA for Mac OS X v10.6 was phased out in June 2012 and it will not be returning for Mac OS X v10.7 and later. The Apple Certified Technical Coordinator v10.7 now replaced the ACSA as Apple's highest certification for systems administrators. Prior to its phase out, it was available for Mac OS X v.10.6 and Mac OS X v10.5. The Mac OS X v10.4 exam was phased out in October 2009, and the Mac OS X v10.3 exam was phased out in December 2005.

For Mac OS X v.10.6 Snow Leopard, the Mac OS X Advanced System Administration exam was eliminated, and replaced with Security & Mobility. The following exams were required:

  • Mac OS X Server Essentials v10.6 Exam
  • Mac OS X Directory Services v10.6 Exam
  • Mac OS X Deployment v10.6 Exam
  • Mac OS X Security and Mobility v10.6 Exam

For Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, the ACSA program was revised to require much more knowledge of the Mac OS X Server than 10.4. To achieve the ACSA 10.5, the following exams were required:

  • Mac OS X Server Essentials v10.5 Exam
  • Mac OS X Directory Services v10.5 Exam
  • Mac OS X Deployment v10.5 Exam
  • Mac OS X Advanced System Admin v10.5 Exam

To achieve the ACSA for Mac OS X v.10.4 Tiger, new candidates took any of the following exams to earn the seven required certification credits:

  • Mac OS X Deployment v10.4 Exam (9L0-609) -- 2 credits
  • Xsan Administration v1.1 Exam (9L0-610) -- 3 credits
  • Directory Services Integration and Administration v10.4 Exam (9L0-611) -- 4 credits
  • Security Best Practices v10.4 Exam (9L0-612) -- 3 credits
  • Podcasting and Streaming Internet Media Exam (9L0-613) -- 3 credits
  • Command Line Setup and Administration v10.4 Exam (9L0-614) -- 3 credits
  • Network Account Management v10.4 Exam (9L0-615) -- 3 credits
  • Xsan for Pro Video Technician v10.4 Exam (9L0-932) -- 3 credits

To move on to the Apple Certified Trainer passing the test is only one step. Trainer candidates must not only take the Apple Training course, they must also pass the exam with a 90% or better, and attend a train-the-trainer class.

MSRs for Windows, Mac, and iPad

Students and exam-takers downloading the test-taking software, Examplify, should review these Minimum System Requirements (MSRs) to ensure their devices are supported. Examplify works with most modern computers, both Mac and Windows operating systems. Examplify will not run on Chromebooks, Android, or Linux operating systems. See requirements by platform below:

For Windows:

    • Operating System: 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10.
    • Alternate versions of Windows 10, such as Windows RT and Windows 10 S, are NOT supported at this time.
      • If you are using a Microsoft Surface device, please read this article for important instructions on Windows 10 “S mode” versus the standard Windows 10. S mode is not compatible with Examplify.
    • Only genuine versions of Windows Operating Systems are supported.
    • The versions of Windows 10 certified for use are 1909, 2004 and 20H2.
    • The English (United States) Language Pack must be installed.
    • ExamSoft does not support tablet devices other than Surface Pro as detailed above.
    • CPU Processor: 2.0 GHz Intel i3 processor or equivalent (Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets are not supported)
    • RAM: 4GB or higher
    • Hard drive: highest recommended for the operating system or 4GB of available space.
    • For on-site support, and in order to back up the answer files to a USB drive, a working USB port is required. (Newer devices may require an adaptor.)
    • For technical troubleshooting, account passwords including BitLocker keys, may be required.
    • Internet connection for download, registration, exam download, upload and some exam features.
    • Examplify cannot be run within virtualized environments or environments that require persistent network (local or otherwise) connections during secure exams. This includes, but is not limited to, VMWare, Parallels, Citrix workspace, virtual disks, streamed images, etc.
    • Screen resolution should be at least 1024 x 768.

The following requirements apply for exams with ExamID or ExamMonitor enabled:

  • Examplify version 2.5 or greater
  • Hard drive: 4GB or higher available space
  • RAM: 8GB or higher recommended; 4GB required
  • Webcam: Integrated camera or external USB camera supported by your operating system. Virtual cameras are not supported.
  • Microphone (no headphones, no virtual mics)
  • Internet: 2.5 Mpbs upload speed

Please note: You may not use any virtual camera or audio software with ExamID or ExamMonitor.

Some Windows devices utilize a technology called “Intel Smart Sound Technology Microphone Array”, which is not supported by ExamID and ExamMonitor. This technology is most commonly found in Lenovo devices. Users with these devices will be unable to select their internal microphone and begin their exam.

Impacted exam-takers must utilize an external microphone. This can be a standalone microphone, or built into an external camera, however headphones with built-in microphones are not supported. Additional instructions on using an external microphone can be found here.

Before Exam Mac Os Catalina

For Mac:

  • MacOS Catalina (version 10.15.7) is only compatible with Examplify version 2.0.6 or higher (Released on 10/14/19 or later)
  • MacOS Big Sur (version 11.0) is only compatible with Examplify version 2.5 or higher (Released on 11/13/20 or later)
  • Supported operating systems: OS X 10.14.6 (Mojave), macOS Catalina (10.15.7), macOS Big Sur (11.0). Only genuine versions of Mac operating systems are supported.
  • CPU: Intel processor. Devices using Apple’s M1 processor and Apple Rosetta 2 are supported on Examplify version 2.6 and higher. To learn more, click here.
  • RAM: 4GB or higher.
  • Hard Drive: 4GB or higher available space.
  • For on-site support, and in order to back-up the answer files to a USB drive, a working USB port is required (Newer devices may require an adaptor).

  • Server version of Mac OS X is not supported.

For iPad:

  • Hardware Requirements: iPad 5+, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2+, iPad Pro.
  • Operating Systems: iPadOS 12, iPadOS 13, and iPadOS 14 (Only genuine versions of iOS are supported).
  • 500 MB of free space required to commence an exam.
  • iPad must not be Jailbroken.
  • Internet connection for download, registration, exam download and upload.
  • In order to take an exam using an iPad, your institution must first enable iPad support.

The following requirements apply for exams with ExamID or ExamMonitor enabled:

  • Examplify version 4.1 or greater
  • Hard drive: 2GB or higher available space
  • Internet: 2.5 Mpbs upload speed

For the Bar exam, ExamSoft does NOT support any of the following:

  • Desktop computers (unless allowed by your jurisdiction)
  • Chromebooks
  • Android devices
  • Cell phones
  • iPads
  • Tablets
  • Multiple screens
  • VGA splitters

In addition to these technical requirements, a well-lit room that allows your face to be fully illuminated and clear in the camera view is essential for a smooth exam experience and will minimize flagged instances of academic dishonesty.
